- Frequently Asked Questions About Picnicking in Alberta
Few things feel more like summer in Alberta than a blanket beside a mountain lake, opening a basket filled with artisan charcuterie, fresh bread, and local cheese. Eating outdoors feels natural, and often the best dining experiences aren’t found inside four walls. When visiting Alberta and the Canadian Rockies, taking your meal outdoors is one of the best ways to connect with nature and the people you’re sharing the day with.
How Do You Plan the Perfect Picnic?
Whether you’re planning a romantic afternoon with your sweetheart, a family outing with the kids, a hike with your mates, or simply looking to spend the day outdoors, a picnic gives us the opportunity to pause, enjoy life’s simple pleasures, and appreciate both our beautiful surroundings and the wonderful company we’re with.
We believe there are three keys to creating the perfect picnic experience: a perfect spot, the right essentials packed, and gourmet food that will make the day a memory.
Your food should complement your scenery. Choosing locally crafted, quality ingredients is one of the easiest ways to elevate any picnic. When you’re exploring Alberta, few things capture the spirit of the Rockies quite like Rocky Mountain air-dried meats, European-style charcuterie, artisan breads, handcrafted cheeses and flavourful accompaniments that bring every bite together.
And we'll give you all the best options to properly experience our amazing part of the world.
What Are the Best Meats for a Picnic Charcuterie Board?
If there’s one item that deserves to be the centrepiece of every picnic, it’s charcuterie. For centuries, European families have packed cured, shelf-stable meats for mountain walks, countryside lunches, and long journeys because they travel beautifully, require no preparation, and are packed with flavour. Today, they remain one of the simplest ways to create an effortless gourmet picnic.
Looking for something uniquely Canadian? Our European-style charcuteria and air-dried game meats—including elk, bison, venison and wild boar—offer a taste of the Rockies that’s difficult to find anywhere else. Naturally rich in flavour and easy to pack, they’re an unforgettable addition to any picnic basket.
Some of our favourite items?
-
Bündnerfleisch: A Swiss classic with rich, flavourful air-dried beef that melts in your mouth.
-
Smoked Bison: A uniquely Canadian favourite with a rich, savoury flavour that pairs perfectly with the mountains.
-
Wild Boar Pâté: Crafted with premium wild boar, this smooth pâté offers a rich, rustic flavour inspired by traditional European recipes.
-
Prospectors Pepperoni: Crafted for life on the trail, this hearty pepperoni is nitrate-free, just the way nature intended.
How Long Can Charcuterie Stay Out?
Before opening, these products can be safely stored at room temperature without refrigeration, making them an ideal companion for picnics, hikes, and road trips. Once opened or sliced, they’re still best kept cool and dry to preserve their flavour and quality, but unlike fresh deli meats, they travel exceptionally well and are made for adventures.
For more information please read our previous blog, Shelf-Stable Meats Explained: Everything You Need to Know!
🧺 Picnic Tip: While shelf-stable meats are perfect for packing, it’s still best to keep them in a cooler or insulated bag until you’re ready to eat. Once served, enjoy them within 2 hours at room temperature (or 1 hour if it’s above 32°C/90°F) for the best flavour and food safety.

What Artisan Breads and Crackers Should I Get for My Picnic?
Great charcuterie deserves the perfect foundation. Fresh artisan bread adds texture, warmth and character to every picnic, while crisp crackers provide the ideal base for cheeses, pâtés and cured meats. We love supporting fellow local businesses, which is why you’ll find delicious artisan breads from EPICanmore in our store. 🥖
Great options we have?
-
EPICanmore Plain Sourdough: Naturally fermented and baked in Canmore, this artisan sourdough features a crisp crust, airy crumb, and rich flavour.
-
EPICanmore Kaiser Buns: These soft Kaiser buns have a light, fluffy texture and sturdy crust, making them the perfect choice for a picnic
-
Crunchmaster Multi-Seed Baked Crackers (Rosemary & Olive Oil): Made with whole grains and seeds, these gluten-free crackers blend rosemary and smooth taste of olive oil in every bite.

What Are the Best Cheeses to Go on a Picnic Charcuterie Board?
Whether you prefer creamy and mild or bold and aged, cheese adds richness and balance to your charcuterie experience. We recommend choosing two or three varieties with different textures and flavours so everyone can discover their favourite combination. 🧀
The best complimentary cheeses?
-
Gruyère: A Swiss classic with a rich, nutty flavour.
-
Brie: Creamy and buttery, perfect with fresh bread and fruit preserves.
-
Aged Cheddar: Sharp and robust, ideal alongside smoked meats.
-
Goat Cheese: Light, tangy and delicious with crackers and honey.
Looking for a lactose-friendly option? Many aged cheeses, including Gruyère, Swiss and aged cheddar, naturally contain very little lactose and are often well tolerated by people with lactose sensitivities. If you’re avoiding dairy altogether, add on your favourite hummus to add smooth, nutty flavour and richness.
We also have some fun flavoured BellaVitano cheeses in our online shop and deli perfect for a picnic!
Which Accompaniments and Condiments Go on a Picnic Charcuterie Board?
The little details often make the biggest difference and can completely transform a bite, allowing everyone to mix and match flavours to create their own perfect pairing. 🍯
What can you add to your basket?
-
Whole grain and Dijon mustards
-
Pickles and/or pickled vegetables
-
Roasted peppers and antipasto vegetables
We have even more options in our deli, including some amazing local products from LOCALITE and Germany’s top pickle brand, Kühne.
Do You Add Sweet Treats to a Picnic Charcuterie Board?
While chocolate is often thought of as dessert, it also pairs surprisingly well with charcuterie. Rich dark chocolate complements savoury cured meats, while creamy milk chocolate balances the saltiness of aged cheeses, creating flavour combinations that are well worth discovering. If you’re avoiding dairy, dark chocolate, fresh berries and fresh or dried fruit make excellent lactose-free additions to your picnic spread. 🍫
Our sweet finishing touches?
-
Swiss chocolate: Our favourite, Kagi Fret, is available in our deli.
-
Gourmet cookies & biscotti
-
Candied nuts
-
Fresh berries & seasonal fruit
-
Dried fruit

Sparkling mineral water
-
Fresh lemonade or iced tea
-
Craft sodas

Our friends at The Cellar Door in Canmore carries an excellent selection of wines and can help you find the perfect bottle. Can I Drink Alcohol at Picnic Sites in Calgary, Kananaskis, Canmore and Banff? 🍺
It depends on where you’re picnicking. In Calgary, alcohol is permitted only in designated picnic tables, picnic sites, and signed open areas between 11:00 AM and 9:00 PM.
In Kananaskis Country, alcohol is allowed only at select designated day-use picnic sites during the same hours, and signs will indicate where it’s permitted.
In Banff National Park and Canmore, there are no general public drinking areas for picnics. Alcohol is typically allowed only at campsites or where specifically authorized, so always check the rules for the park or picnic area before bringing wine or beer.
